Canon Releases a Compact Cinema Camera and a New VCM Prime Lens

This morning, Canon Canada announced a new edition to their Cinema Camera lineup, along with a shiny new prime lens and an update to an in-demand point-and-shoot. Let's dive into all the latest good stuff!

EOS C50 Cinema Camera

The biggest release comes in the form of the EOS C50, a compact, lightweight challenger to Sony's FX3 that delivers 7K 60P recording from a newly designed 32MP full-frame CMOS sensor. Flexibility is Canon's focus with 3:2 Open Gate recording up to 30p, RAW video capture and simultaneous 2k crop recording.

For those of us who need to pump out projects quickly in various aspect ratios, the simultaneous recording is particularly exciting. You'll be able to capture UHD4k on the CFExpress card while also recording high definition vertical or square crops on the SD card.

In the box, you'll find a detachable top grip that adds two full-size XLR audio inputs, a start-stop button, and a zoom rocker. Basically, everything you need to start a creative professional shoot on day one.

The EOS C50 Cinema Camera is expected to arrive at McBain on November 30th, retailing for $4999.99. You can pre-order yours today!

But Canon wasn't done there. A new camera needs a new lens.

RF 85mm F1.4L VCM Lens

With VCM hybrid lenses like the 20, 24, 35, and 50mm already on the market, the next logical step was a classic portrait length model. The RF 85mm F1.4L VCM is housed inside the same body as its predecessors, but slightly heavier due to the glass elements needed. Its manual iris ring, practically silent focus motor and minimal focus breathing make Canon's newest L-series addition ideal for video and still shooters alike.

Lens construction includes one UD element for minimal chromatic aberration, and one aspheric lens that works to deliver crisp edge-to-edge quality. To reduce ghosting and annoying flare, the lens features Air Sphere Coating (ASC).

We're expecting this new portrait-length lens to arrive in stores this October. You can pre-order yours by following the link below.

Updated Canon Powershot Elph 360

The resurgence of point-and-shoot cameras has been a surprise to everyone, and it's taking some time for production to meet the demand. The announcement of the new Powershot Elph 360 HS A promises to offer some relief. This reliable little pocket camera has undergone very few changes, with notable exceptions being a slight decrease in weight, a switch to MicroSD memory cards, and the loss of Wi-Fi connectivity.
