They say in order to be the best, you need to surround yourself with the best. The company you keep, the mentors you learn from, and the collaborators you work with are imperative in achieving great things. This belief resonates deeply with us at McBain, and it’s why we love to align ourselves with amazing talent—especially when it comes to our trusted friend and education partner, Shane Turgeon, whose recent recognition as the 2024 Canadian Geographic Photographer of the Year has us celebrating BIG time.
Shane's ten-year journey to being named Photographer of the Year started with a bout with acute depression. He found healing in reconnecting with nature through the lens of his camera, documenting the flowers and trees as we walked his dogs. It is a profound reminder that photography has the power to mend the soul. As Shane put it, he began cultivating an “in-the-moment” mindfulness that drove his passion for the medium.
Today, Shane shares his story and experience to inspire others and build on Alberta's thriving photographic community. His collaborations, such as events like Light Chasers Nature Photography Conference, have connected photographers across the country, and his workshops, such as Nature Photography for Better Mental Health and Photographing the Night Sky 101, continue to inspire and teach us all the importance of preserving and sharing the beauty around us.
In celebration of Shane’s extraordinary achievements, McBain is hosting an exclusive gathering at our new flagship location on Saturday afternoon, February 15th. From the serenity of the night sky to the raw power of black bears and storms, Shane has captivated us all with his photographic storytelling. Whether you’re an aspiring photographer, a seasoned pro, or someone who simply loves photography, we’d be thrilled for you to join us in honouring his well-deserved recognition.
It is with this spirit that we hope you’ll join us for a chance to meet Shane, hear about his journey, and celebrate the incredible achievements of one of the best in the business.
See you at McBain on February 15th from 11 am to 1 pm!
