Autumn in Focus: October Photo Contest Winner!

by |

Fall: It came and went faster than a blink. But here to capture all the magic were McBain’s passionate contest storytellers- somehow chashing down autumn before it slipped away and freezing fleeting October moments with unforgettable frames.

This month’s submissions came alive with Autumn’s palette- rich, crisp, warm textures that you could almost feel. Narrowing down our winner was a challenge, but in the end, we prevailed – selecting our top winner and honourable mentions. Take a look at our exceptional finalists!

WINNER

Jonathan Gillingham

“This image was taken at Aylmer Lake Lodge in the Northwest Territories.” – Jonathan Gillingham

Jonathan’s photograph captures one of the most striking and elusive scenes in Canadian Wildlife Photography: a loen caribou cutting through icy northern waters – a reminder of the vast, untouched landscapes that definie Canada’s North.

The calm water and quiet determination of this animal creates a sense of stillness that draws the viewer in. Jonathan’s patience and timing paid off beautifully, resulting in an image that balances power and serenity in equal measure. Congratulations Jonathan on your win!

HONOURABLE MENTIONS:

Eliot Slavens

Starting a hike at 3:00 am in the cold darkness is a challenge in itself, but Eliot’s dedication to chasing the perfect light paid off in spectacular fashion. The result is a poetic landscape that feels both peaceful and triumphant at the top of Pharaoh Peak. It reminds us that sometimes the most memorable photographs come after long climbs, early alarms, and a little stubborn determination.

Eliot says, “Though it was hard to get out of the sleeping bag, this photo made the trek well worth it in the end.”

Michelle Brandenburg

The reflections ripple softly on the water’s surface in Michelle’s photo of submerged trees at Preacher’s Point. Her photo transforms a rainy afternoon into something hauntingly beautiful as partially submerged birch trees feel almost like a painting. Michelle captures a brief moment in nature and turns it into something moody and quiet, proving that bad weather can sometimes yield the most evocative photographs. Way to go, Michelle!

Autumn may have slipped past us, but thanks to the artists in our community, its colours and stories remain preserved. Every season reveals a new way of seeing the world – in all its boldness, quiet peace, and wild beauty. Huge thanks to everyone who entered October’s contest, as we welcome you to view some more of this month’s submissions below!

As the landscape shifts again, we’re excited to witness to next chapter through your lenses.

Submit your November Photos and keep the storytelling alive!
