With Spring ushering in a wave of artistic talent, this month’s photo submissions were nothing short of captivating, showcasing a vibrant blend of creativity and natural beauty. Perched atop a rugged forest log was Abi, a natural in front of the camera, who knew exactly how to steal the spotlight – all while asking her photographer, Deanna, to hold her beer. She knew her assignment, and it won her this month’s top prize!
WINNER: DEANNA SAUNTRY
We are thrilled to announce Deanna Sauntry as February’s Photo Contest Winner, having wooed the voters with her Sunset Dog photo.
Deanna shared, "I had visited the burned area south of Edson in the fall after being evacuated twice in 2023. It was interesting to see how tall the grass and thistles grew, creating a beautiful contrast with the blackened burnt trees. I found a half-burned fallen tree and placed my late dog Abi on it. I enjoyed the complementary colours of the fall and the sad, but beautiful atmosphere."

HONOURABLE MENTIONS:
JUDY USTINA
The journey of courtship isn’t always black and white, but Judy's stunning capture of the courtship dance among these majestic cranes beautifully conveys this delicate ritual in striking monochrome. The dramatic black-and-white imagery amplifies the moment's elegance and intensity, perfectly showcasing these magnificent creatures' grace as they engage in their timeless dance.
Judy shared, "I spent 3 hours over two days observing these beautiful creatures do their mating dances and captured a photo of the male framing the female, with his wings outspread. This was on the North Island of Hokkaido in Japan.”
LISEL MASCALUK
Lisel Mascaluk must have a soft spot for squirrels, as her submissions often feature these playful creatures, capturing their quirky personalities in the most charming ways. Lisel's lounging squirrel photo had the McBain staff voters in stitches, bringing plenty of laughs to the voting process.
In her Lounging Squirrel photo, Lisel captures the essence of that perfect, laid-back moment we can all relate to with a simple yet perfect caption: “Don't we all feel this way at some point?
We’d like to thank all our entrants for their beautiful submissions, and we look forward to seeing even more creative work next month!
