If summer had an anthem, it might go: “August slipped away, and for a moment in time, your photos were prime!” Honestly, though! We had some pitch-perfect photos this month to wrap up a summer that will leave memories playing on repeat. Thank you to everyone who submitted their best work for August! The level of talent always continues to blow us away, and this month was no exception.
August Winner:
David McClure
We’re thrilled to announce that David McClure is our August Monthly Photo Contest Winner! It was such a delight to see an architectural photograph come up on top this month. Since animals often dominate the wins, it’s nice to see a moment for the architecture community.
His architecture photo of a circular stairwell caught our staff’s eye with its striking contrast and dynamic point of view storytelling.
Why We Loved This Shot:
- Creativity: A unique Angle. A contrast between edges and curves. And colour pops in the right places.
- Technical Skill: A Sharp photo with an exposure that frames the photo well
- Storytelling: There’s a quiet story in this picture that probably goes unnoticed, but along the edges, everything feels muted - almost college life reflected in a monotonous tone. But your eyes are drawn up the spiralling staircase towards a burst of light and vibrant greenery, like a glimpse of hope or beauty at the heart of the everyday grind. It’s like a visual paradox.
The Prize:
As this month’s winner, David McClure will receive a 16x20 gallery-wrapped canvas of his winning print.
Honourable Mentions:
Dustin Bowdige
Dustin took this photo of a BC Lion warm-up before taking on the Edmonton Elks. No stranger to showing up in our top 3, Dustin has a knack for visual storytelling. We specifically enjoy his black and white sports photos.
Dustin’s image this month captures the anticipation of a moment, stripping away distractions and letting the viewer focus on the grit and emotion of a game before it even begins. Great shot, Dustin! Definitely one of our McBain favourites!
Alec Postill
Our next honourable mention brings a single-shot image to the mix that stirred up lots of conversation among staff members. The result is a striking and cinematic image that feels both eerie and majestic. Alec’s willingness to immerse himself in his art and stretch his creative muscles paid off as he describes the process of his photo:
“I had an idea like this in my head for many years and finally got to execute it in the spring of 2024. I often incorporate props into my self-portraits, and this particular evening at Alexandra Falls, I had an old cape and a vintage oil lamp with me. Despite being all alone in the middle of the night, the hair on my neck stood with every wolf howl. My eyes were heavy from the 1200km drive the day before…. I managed to create some of my favourite shots to date.”
