Well, it’s that time again! Time to roll out the red carpet, polish the lenses, and crown our newest Photo Contest winner!
This month saw a slew of submissions honouring wildlife and the great outdoors. As Spring takes root, creativity finds fertile soil in stillness, reminding us that the best things bloom for those who wait.
Worth the wait are picturesque gems from patient wildlife watchers, early-morning adventurers, and nature lovers who know how to find beauty in the quietest corners of the world.
April Photo Contest Winner:
Judy Ustina – The Last Catch
This month’s winning photo takes us to the shores of Negombo, Sri Lanka, where the rhythms of village life unfold in effortless harmony. Judy Ustina, who won Honourable Mention a few months ago when she captured the courtship dance of majestic cranes, finally claims the top spot with a striking glimpse into coastal life.
It’s a scene full of movement, patience, and instinct, capturing a slice of everyday life that feels quite cinematic. In it, we witness fishermen shaking the last sardines from their nets, egrets hovering with hope, and a determined dog chasing them off for his chance at a stolen share.

Honourable Mentions:

Jordan Wiess – Trunk Reverence
It looks like Jordan’s travels have paid off! Not only did it win him an Honourable Mention last month with his capture of Banteay Srei Temple in Cambodia, this month it’s his travels to Zimbabwe that have earned him top recognition.
Jordan’s striking photo, taken from an underground blind in Zimbabwe, brings us eye-to-eye with a gentle giant in a rare moment of rest. There’s a quiet reverence in this image — the light, the texture of the earth, and the stillness of the elephant speak volumes.

Michelle Brandenburg – Mountain Bluebird
Michelle’s portrait of a Mountain Bluebird is simple, elegant, and striking — a burst of colour set against a soft backdrop, boldly contrasted with the harsh textures of metal and chains.
Capturing birds in flight or at rest takes skill, and Michelle’s sharp focus and timing deliver a beautiful tribute to this vibrant species.
Thank you to everyone who submitted photos in April — your work is an important contribution to our McBain community, and we can’t wait to see what summer brings for creative contributions to our next photo contest.
