Tamron announces new 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3: “An entirely new category for a high-performance ultra-telephoto lens”
Tamron announced a new versatile ultra-telephoto zoom lens on Thursday, dubbed the Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD for Sony E-Mount. Quite a mouthful. Besides serving as an inspiration for Elon Musk’s next kid’s name, the new lens offers quite a bit in the way of performance and features, and may catch the eye of sports and wildlife shooters alike.
The lens will be roughly the same size as Tamron’s current 100-400, while offering a much wider angle of view when zoomed out completely. This will help tremendously for those that rely on zooming out to recompose before punching back in to nail the shot- by offering 8x zoom in one lens, the new 50-400mm allows shooters to stay put, instead of backing up like they’d be used to doing with a 70-200mm or 100-400mm.
The lens also features a minimum focus distance of just 25cm at 50mm, for a 1:2 magnification ratio. This, combined with the focus limiter function can serve great in macro scenarios like detail shots at sporting events (medals, name tags…).
The lens comes equipped with Tamron’s VC (Vibration Compensation) and a linear VXD autofocus motor. An optional tripod collar can be attached and features an Arca-Swiss dovetail for easy tripod mounting.
With a yet-to-be-determined price tag, the new 50-400 certainly aims to be the be-all end-all of telephoto lenses upon its release later this fall. No exact timing or pricing information is yet available.

Nikon Fixes Bug in Nearly 10 Year Old D7100
Nikon has released a firmware update for the nearly decade-old D7100, updating the camera version from 1.04 to 1.05. Other than a small bug fix, nothing of note was included in the update. The feature list is as follows:
Fixed an issue that resulted in live view ending about 10 minutes after being started in Camera Control Pro 2 with [No limit] selected for Custom Setting c4 [Monitor off delay] > [Live view] in the [CUSTOM SETTING MENU].
That’s it. While it may seem puzzling for Nikon to address such an arbitrary issue in a discontinued, obsolete model in their lineup, it shows incredible commitment to supporting their products long after launch.
