Professional filmmaking shifted this week when Nikon announced it's developing nine cinema lenses in the Nikkor Z Cinema T1.9 VV series. Videographers will look forward to a formidable fleet of nine prime lenses engineered to rewrite the rules of cinematography.
Nikon’s new design philosophy promises to eliminate the compromise between beautiful, character-rich rendering, autofocus precision and the practicality required in professional production environments. It blends the clinical predictability top-tier professionals require with the lightning-fast versatility that solo, high-end creators need.
This also marks the first NIKKOR series ever built to natively cover an image circle large enough for the RED V-RAPTOR [X] VV sensor. (40.96mm x 21.60mm). The series represents a massive victory for creators wanting to see optical engineering pushed to its limits.
Also in development are future firmware updates (Firmware Version 2.00) for the Nikon ZR, aimed at bringing open gate recording and desqueeze display support for anamorphic lenses to the ZR platform.
Updates will include support for Log3G10 and REDWideGamutRGB when recording in H.265, delivering compact file sizes with high colour-grading latitude. Creators will also be happy to see a new option for selecting the level of High ISO NR available during H.265 Log recording, enabling image rendering, as well as support for focus peaking during recording in the R3D NE format.
Moreover, RED is updating its RED CONTROL and RED CONTROL PRO applications to add remote-control support for the Nikon ZR, giving creators greater flexibility in their storytelling.
If anyone still doubted the long-term impact of Nikon’s acquisition of RED Digital Cinema, this is your answer. Nikon is no longer just capturing moments; they are building tools that will shape the visual culture of cinema’s next chapter.
