Nikon Z8 Firmware 2.0

Nikon has just released Firmware 2.0 for the Z8, complete with enhancements across the board for photographers of virtually every discipline, from birders to videographers. Z8 owners will benefit from new features, improved performance and enhanced functionality for this already overpowered mirrorless camera. Let's explore some of the highlights!

[Bird] Mode
A new Bird Mode aims to make tracking and capturing feathered beasties a breeze with enhanced autofocus and superior bird detection. Your updated Z8 will more easily track birds in complex scenes and against high-contrast backgrounds. Nikon also says the camera can now auto-detect more uncommon and unique-looking species, so if the Dodo ever makes a comeback, you're all set.

Auto Capture
Several new automated capture modes will let you start capturing images or videos based on specific parameters such as motion in the scene, subject detection, and distance from the camera. These parameters can be used individually or in combination.

Enhanced Pre-Release Capture
Holding your Z8's shutter-release button halfway will activate Pre-Release Capture, saving images up to one second before and up to four seconds after the shutter button is fully pressed. Pre-Release can now be active for up to 300 seconds, or enough time to cook five delicious Pop Tarts! Ahem…sorry, we skipped breakfast this morning.

New Picture Controls for Portraiture
The Z8 can help make your portrait photos even more impactful when you deploy the Rich Tone Portrait, Flat Monochrome and Deep Tone Monochrome picture controls.

Pixel Shift
Landscape, architecture and macro photographers craving intensely detailed images will be excited about the Z8's new Pixel Shift Mode! It combines up to 32 exposures to generate stunning, high-resolution photos with little noise or moiré patterning.

ISO 200 Equivalent in N-Log Video
A new enhancement to the Z8's video capture offers more tonal information in shadows without significantly increasing noise. The Lo 2.0 setting lets you bring out amazing details in post-production, even if you've filmed a dark subject against a bright background.

Other enhancements Nikon has in store for you:

  • Cycle AF-area function for quick switching between AF modes.
  • Exposure Delay mode for shake-free tripod shooting.
  • Additional 1.3, 1.7, 2.3, and 2.7 EV exposure bracketing increments.
  • Expanded custom control functions.
  • Control over focus point outline thickness.
  • New custom shutter sounds and volume options.
  • Vertical orientation of info and menu displays.
  • Improved magnified playback operation during frame advance.
  • Additional settings options for Non-CPU lenses.
  • Improved EVF brightness during playback.
  • Remaining card space warning during video recording.
