Meet the Canon EOS R6 III and RF 45mm F1.2

The long-rumoured Canon EOS R6 III is rumour no more! Early this morning, Canon Canada announced the latest iteration of its popular enthusiast-level full-frame camera, bringing a suite of serious upgrades for photographers of all disciplines. Joining the R6 III will be a new RF 45mm F1.2 prime lens at an incredibly tempting price point. Let's dive into all the details.

Canon EOS R6 III

Featuring the same 32.5MP CMOS Image Sensor as Canon's latest C50 cinema camera, the EOS R6 III gets a 34% bump in resolution over its predecessor—more pixels to play with means more cropping flexibility and larger print resolutions for all your shots. And you'll be taking a lot, with continuous shooting up to a blazing 40 frames per second. The R6 III also supports pre-continuous shooting, capturing 20 fps before the shutter is fully depressed, ensuring your camera is reacting before your subject does.

The EOS R6 III is also positioned as a video powerhouse. The aforementioned cinema sensor can produce 7K recording up to 60p (Canon Cinema Raw Lite), oversampled 4K <60p, 4K 120p, and maximum recording flexibility with 3:2 Open Gate recording up to 30p. Canon has also made a quality-of-life upgrade to the menu system, making selecting your desired video resolution much more intuitive.

There have also been updates to the ports; gone is the mini-HDMI port, replaced with a standard full-sized connection. The dual card slot now supports one UHS-II SD card and a CFExpress card, providing the speed and capacity needed to record Canon Cinema Raw video.

Other highlights include:

  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with People, Animal, Vehicle detection, and Register People Priority.
  • 14 Colour Filters.
  • 8.5EV Built-in image stabilization.
  • Canon Log 2 video with up to 15+ stops of dynamic range.
  • Versatility for Slow-Mo video or Fast Motion Time-Lapse.
  • Ability to apply a Look file (LUT) in-camera.
  • Transfer LUTs via Camera Connect app.
  • New Red tally lamp.
  • Natural 3.69m dot EVF with OVF View Assist.
  • 3.0" Vari-Angle LCD Screen.

Overall, the EOS R6 Mark III promises to be a significant upgrade over the R6 II, while retaining a familiar weather-sealed form factor. The camera is expected to arrive in late November, starting at $3499.99.

Canon RF 45mm F1.2 STM Lens

The photography giant also dropped a new wide-aperture prime lens on us that is both unique in focal length and price. Canon is very excited about this lens and its expressive potential. Here are the highlights:

  • Standard 45mm prime lens with an f/1.2 aperture.
  • Large-diameter mount and short back focus, combined with digital distortion correction, result in a compact and reasonably priced f/1.2 large-diameter lens.
  • Bokeh, enabled by a large-diameter lens, allows users to create images with a three-dimensional look, isolating subjects from the background.
  • An aperture of f/1.2 allows for faster shutter speeds in darker situations.
  • Effective placement of one PMo aspheric lens reduces aberrations (a first for Canon in a f/1.2 lens).
  • Gear-type STM technology with a magnetic detection system enables a significantly smaller and lighter system.
  • The 45mm focal length is closer to human vision, providing more natural angles of view and perspective.
  • A dedicated control ring lets you customize the adjustment of various functions.

The RF 45mm F1.2 STM Lens is expected to arrive in December for just $569.99.
