Filmmakers of all skill levels likely have their ears perked this morning as Nikon has announced the first Z-Series camera co-developed with RED. The Nikon ZR introduces a groundbreaking new full-frame cinema camera to the market, one that adds the power of RED's renowned colour science to a compact form factor similar to the Nikon Z6 III, all at an accessible price point.
The camera's features are highlighted by the inclusion of REDCODE RAW (R3D NE), wide dynamic range 32-Bit Float Audio, up to 7.5 stops of in-body image stabilization and advanced, AI-assisted subject detection capable of tracking people, animals and vehicles. But for us, the inclusion of the 1000-nit 4" vari-angle video monitor is particularly exciting.
As Alli Forsythe, creator and filmmaker, explains in a mini-doc produced for Nikon:
"The monitor on the ZR is a four-inch screen, and the image was so rich I noticed I just started looking at the monitor instead of the one I added [to my rig]. If you look at this thing, it is extremely bright. I don't have to squint, I don't have to hold it to my face, it's just solid and ready to go."
Overall, the Nikon ZR looks to be a very intriguing entry into the video-first mirrorless space, and we can't wait to get our hands on it this October.

New Nikon Shotgun Microphone
Nikon also announced the ME-D10 Shotgun Microphone that connects to the ZR's accessory shoe. The ME-D10 does not require a battery or cable and features built-in shock mounts to minimize any interference. The new mic is also expected in October 2025.
