The D-Lux8 retains the 10.9-34mm (24-75mm equivalent) F1.7-2.8 zoom lens and offers multiple crop modes from a Four Thirds-type (17.3 x 13mm) sensor. Although the lens doesn't cover the entire sensor area, resulting in up to 17MP images from the 21MP sensor, the 3:2, 4:3, and 16:9 crop modes are designed to maintain the same diagonal angle-of-view, ensuring a consistent 24-75mm equivalent perspective. A switch on top of the lens encourages users to experiment with these crop modes.
The camera also features a higher resolution 1.84M dot (960 x 640px) rear screen and an improved viewfinder. The D-Lux8's 2.36M dot (1024 x 768px) viewfinder, despite seeming like a downgrade from the D-Lux7's 2.76M dot specification, is an improvement for many users. The D-Lux7 utilized a field-sequential finder that updated red, green, and blue information sequentially, which could cause 'tearing' effects during quick movements or blinking. The D-Lux8's conventional OLED finder, with red, green, and blue dots at each pixel location, eliminates this issue. Additionally, the D-Lux8 will include a USB-C socket for convenient charging.
