August winds are dying down, and as summer begins its slow transition into fall, photographers across Alberta are making the most of these golden evenings. Colourful gardens, bustling critters, and lingering warm-weather adventures have kept photographers busy with their cameras in hand. One of the things we love most about the Monthly Photo Contest is seeing how differently each photographer interprets the world around them. Give a group of photographers the same sky, or even the same location, and you’ll still come away with a collection of completely new images. Below, we celebrate some of these by showcasing the Winning image and Honourable Mentions.

Submit your photo for a chance to Win a 16x20 Gallery Wrapped Canvas!

WINNER

Tim Osborne

Tim Osborne’s winning image transports viewers to the rugged coastlines of Scotland, where a long-awaited wildlife encounter finally became reality. Framed by delicate wildflowers and surrounded by impossibly vibrant grass, the puffins instantly become the stars of the show with their unmistakable features and larger-than-life personalities. As Tim shared, photographing puffins had been a long-time goal, and the result was well worth the wait. Equal parts wildlife portrait and fairytale landscape, this image captures the reward of chasing a photographic dream and finding the scene even better than imagined.

Honourable Mention

Victoria Goodbrand

Not every memorable animal portrait comes from the wilderness. Victoria Goodbrand has become known in our Monthly Photo Contest for her charming farm photography, regularly capturing the character and personality of rural life. Featuring a young farm pig contentedly chewing on a strand of grass, the image is overflowing with personality and charm. There’s a curiosity and playful energy captured in this candid farm moment that brings a touch of humour to this delightful photo. As Victoria jokingly noted, "Eventually farm-to-table, but firstly featuring a garden-to-farm transition."

Honourable Mention

Alexander Hunter

For a completely different perspective, Alexander Hunter's dramatic aerial photograph showcases both the beauty and power of Alberta's wilderness. Looking down over a dense forest canopy, viewers can spot a helicopter working above drifting smoke while a wildfire burns below. The image balances scale, atmosphere, and action, creating a scene that feels almost cinematic in its intensity. Alexander describes himself as "a freelance photographer whose passion burns like the wildfires he captures," and that passion is evident in a photograph that documents an important story while delivering a striking visual impact.

Congratulations to this month’s Winners, and thank you to everyone who took the time to submit their beloved images. As September begins, the opportunities for great photography are only just getting started. Crisp mornings, changing leaves, community events, and a new season of adventures are all waiting to be captured.

We look forward to seeing what you will capture this month! For your chance to win a Free 16x20 Gallery-Wrapped Canvas of your photo, we’d love for you to submit your favourite image to our September Monthly Photo Contest.

While photographers prepare for another season of vibrant colours and dramatic landscapes, Sigma is expanding its lineup with two new lenses that will fit nicely into your creative toolkit.

The new Sigma CONTEMPORARY 20-60mm F2.8-4 DG brings a highly portable ultra-wide standard zoom range to full-frame photographers, while the new Sigma ART 85mm F1.2 DG delivers flagship-level portrait performance in what Sigma says is the smallest and lightest lens in its class.

Both lenses could stand alone, giving photographers a striking balance between documentary-style work and cinematic portraits with beautifully blurred backgrounds. These latest additions offer new creative possibilities for Sony E-mount and L-Mount shooters alike. Below, we break down the practical features creators are likely to appreciate most.

Shop the New Sigma Lenses »

Sigma CONTEMPORARY 20-60mm F2.8-4 DG

Taking a fresh approach to the standard zoom lens by starting at an expansive 20mm rather than the traditional 24mm, it’s a focal length that might sound small on paper, but delivers noticeably more room for landscapes, architecture, interiors, and environmental storytelling.

It’s an appealing ultra-wide option because it also weighs just 385g, making it lightweight without sacrificing full-frame image quality.

The optical design delivers consistent sharpness across the zoom range, thanks to Sigma’s use of three aspherical elements and three SLD glass elements. Coupled with Sigma’s close-focusing performance, photographers can move seamlessly from wide scenes to detailed subjects without changing lenses.

Key Features

Versatile 20-60mm zoom range

Bright F2.8 aperture at the wide end

Compact 385g design

Excellent edge-to-edge sharpness

Near half-macro close-focusing capability

Fast and quiet HLA autofocus

Minimal focus breathing for video

Dust- and splash-resistant construction

Water- and oil-repellent front coating

Sigma ART 85mm F1.2 DG

For photographers prioritizing image quality, subject separation, and creative control, Sigma’s new 85mm ART F1.2 DG is the headline grabber.

Considered one of the most popular choices for portrait photography, Sigma has paired it with its brightest aperture in the company’s lineup: F1.2. The launch of the 85mm ART F1.2 also completes Sigma’s trio of F1.2 Art primes alongside the 35mm F.2 DG II Art and the 50mm F1.2 DN Art.

Weighing only 905g, the company claims it is the smallest and lightest 85mm F1.2 autofocus lens currently available for full-frame mirrorless systems. It also incorporates Sigma’s HLA autofocus system, delivering fast, quiet focusing for both photo and video applications.

Key Features

Bright F1.2 maximum aperture

Exceptional sharpness from wide open

Rich, smooth bokeh with 13-blade diaphragm

Smallest and lightest lens in its class*

Fast, quiet dual HLA autofocus system

Minimal focus breathing for video

Dual customizable AFL buttons

Aperture ring with lock and click switch

Dust- and splash-resistant construction

Water- and oil-repellent front element

Availability

Every month, photographers submit their favourite images for a chance to win a 16x20” Gallery Wrapped Canvas Print. And every month, our McBain judges confidently declare they’ll be able to pick a Winner. But every month, that confidence disappears about ten minutes into the judging process, and we find ourselves tangled in a deep tie-breaker debate.

Behind the scenes, we talk amongst ourselves, highlighting images that immediately grab our attention, ones that snuck up on us out of nowhere, and ones that made us reflect. And so the time has come to celebrate these submissions and feature the top honorees who took a little time out of their summer to showcase their creativity!

Submit your Photo for our August Monthly Photo Contest!

WINNER

Dennis Macajelos

This month’s winning image by Dennis Macajelos is a great example of why spontaneously bringing your camera pays off, even when you’re not expecting much. Captured during a last-minute evening walk outside Louis Hole Centennial Park, the photograph freezes a fleeting moment as an Eared Grebe bursts into motion across the water. This bird’s striking red eye immediately draws the viewer in, while the trailing droplets in motion in its wings add a sense of energy and anticipation, as though takeoff is only moments away. The smooth reflective water provides a clean, uncluttered backdrop, allowing the bird to take center stage.

Dennis commented, “In Alberta’s summer, the sun sets late around 9 pm- 10 pm.” This allowed him a last-minute evening stroll. “After several seconds, this wonderful waterbird displayed some amazing action, and luckily, I captured it on shutter. Sometimes amazing things come unexpectedly!”

Congratulations, Dennis!

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

Monique-Langevin-Connell

On the opposite end of the creative spectrum from spontaneity lies intention, and Monique’s striking image of Edmonton’s Walterdale Bridge is a beautiful example of what can happen when preparation meets opportunity, proving that sometimes the best images belong to those willing to get out of bed long before the rest of us.

Monique says, “I got up ridiculously early on this particular morning as two of my apps predicted fog. As I was driving, I noticed how the Walterdale Bridge was casting shadows in the fog. Naturally, I had to pull over to photograph this unusual phenomenon!” And wow, what a photograph she was rewarded with. Such a beautiful photo, in fact, that it rivalled tightly for the top spot, losing out on only one vote. McBain staff loved celebrating this photo, and we hope to see more contributions from Monique in the future!

Tyler King

Carnivals are typically connected with bright lights, bold colours, and endless energy, which is probably why Tyler’s black-and-white interpretation immediately led us to linger a bit longer on this photo. Captured on a rainy day at K-Days here in Edmonton, the monochrome treatment transforms a familiar scene into something more timeless and reflective. Smiling children in the foreground and a bustling swing ride overhead still convey the excitement of the midway, but it’s the young girl peering into the camera lens off-center that changes the mood a bit. With her wind-tossed hair and serious expression, her face makes the statement that she could be evaluating every decision you’ve ever made. It provides a wonderfully unexpected contrast to the cheerful atmosphere around her. McBain staff gravitated to the subtle nostalgia in this photo, and I suspect it lingers in the space between the rainy fairgrounds and the girl’s enigmatic stare.

Once again, our McBain judges learned the same lesson they learn every month: choosing a winner is easier in theory than in practice. Thank you to everyone who submitted their creations this month and gave us the difficult task of narrowing down such a talented collection of images. While this month’s honours belong to Dennis, Monique, and Tyler, the photographs below showcase all the other talent submitted this month - proving how difficult the voting process can be!

Submit your Photo for Next Month’s Contest!

Despite people being on vacation, many still showed up for June’s Monthly Photo Contest! June’s submissions took us everywhere. One moment, we were face-to-face with owls, bison, and farm kittens; the next, we were wandering the streets of Kyoto, then cheering from the sidelines of a soccer match. We had landscapes so crisp you could almost feel the breeze! From fleeting encounters to carefully composed scenes, the result was a diverse gallery that showcased the creativity and curiosity of photographers across the community. Below, we celebrate the artists who came out on top!

WINNER:

Jessica Noble

June’s winning image captures both the power and presence of one of Canada’s most iconic animals. By choosing a high-contrast black-and-white style, Jessica strips away distractions and draws our attention to the bison itself. There’s a story in the texture and detail of the bison’s fur, telling the story of an animal perfectly adapted to its prairie home. The dramatic contrast gives the portrait a timeless quality, highlighting the strength and character in this beautiful, majestic animal.

Jessica says,

"I have visited the beautiful Waterton National Park many times but had never driven through the bison paddock until just recently. It was amazing to see these giant, strong animals in their natural environment…I highly recommend taking the drive and stopping to watch them. They may even come up for a lick or two on your vehicle!"

HONOURABLE MENTIONS:

David McClure

“Lost Soles”

David’s photograph transforms an unusual roadside discovery into something intriguing and atmospheric. We loved the combination of heavy storm clouds, muted tones, and the countless weathered boots covering the structure. It’s mysterious and yet inviting. His decision to lean into the scene’s eerie mood through editing helps tell the story of the location while encouraging viewers to imagine the stories behind the many “lost soles”.

David says,

"Upon arriving at Great Sand Hills, this structure is predominant at the top of a dune! The day was overcast with heavy, menacing clouds, as it had been raining earlier. With a short climb up, more detail was revealed, and behold, all these boots nailed over every square inch of the structure and in some places over the top of others!”

Edna Sayoto Cabalo

Few landscapes inspire awe quite like Antarctica, and Edna’s photograph beautifully captures both its scale and solitude. The sharp forms of the icebergs, piercing the deep blue water like towering sculptures, create a sense of enormity. Much like David’s image, atmosphere plays a key role here. The dramatic clouds and shifting light add a sense of mystery, while the vast, open scene draws the viewer forward, as though they’re being ushered into another world.

Edna reflects on this, “The dynamic, sculptural shape of the iceberg made me feel so small in a vast place. This iceberg, although smaller than the other icebergs in the area, highlights the beauty of a pristine, serene, cold place floating calmly in the deep-blue waters of Antarctica."

Every photo in this month’s gallery began with someone noticing a moment worth preserving. Congratulations to our winner and honourable mentions, and thank you to everyone who shared a piece of their artistry with us. We can’t wait to see where your cameras take you next. Keep exploring, experimenting, and sharing your perspective. We love seeing new photographers, fresh ideas, and unexpected angles to discover every month. Check out more submissions below.

Guest blog by Josh McCabe

Patagonia is a photographer’s dream. It is home to some of the most dramatic landscapes on earth. Sharp granite peaks that tear through the sky, endless wind-shaped valleys, and, if you time it right, some of the deepest red and orange autumn foliage you will ever see.

In this short guide, I’ll break down timing for peak fall colours, my top five photo locations, and the essential gear you’ll want to bring to come home with strong imagery. Just know this upfront. Patagonia is not easy. The weather is one of the most unpredictable in the world, and conditions can change within minutes.

36mm, F/3.2, 1/2,500 seconds.

When to Go

El Chaltén, Argentina

To catch peak autumn colour here, I would aim for late April into early May, with some yearly variation depending on snowfall and temperature shifts.

On my most recent trip, colours peaked around April 5th and were already fading by April 7th. That window can move, but it tends to be short and intense. It is always better to arrive slightly early and warm tones in post than to arrive late and miss the foliage entirely.

Torres Del Paine, Chile

Torres del Paine transitions later than El Chaltén. Lower-elevation valleys typically peak between April 15th and April 20th, with greater variability depending on wind conditions and early cold fronts.

The best strategy is to plan Argentina first, then move into Chile as the colour shifts.

Photography Gear to Bring

Left Photo: 42mm, F/2.8, 1/250 sec. Middle Photo: 24mm, F/4, 1/160 sec. Right Photo: 45mm, F/2.8, 1/250 sec.

Main Body: Canon EOS R6 Mark III: You will want a weather-sealed camera to combat the crazy Patagonia weather. This camera is a hybrid and produces stunning photos and videos.

Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8: At many of the locations you visit, you'll be up close and personal with the mountains. A wide angle is a must for fitting them in.

Canon RF 24-70 f/2.8: The most versatile focal range for Patagonia. This will likely live on your camera most of the time.

Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8: One of the most important lenses in the kit. It allows you to isolate peaks like Fitz Roy and compress layers of mountains, clouds, and light.

DJI Mavic 4: Your mini drone will not cut it in Patagonia. You need a drone that can handle some wind, like this one. Drones are restricted in most areas of Patagonia. So, I wouldn’t say it is a must, but for a couple of scenes, it was nice to have.

Peak Design Travel Tripod (Carbon Fibre): Lightweight enough to take on longer hikes and packs down surprisingly small. It handled the wild winds of Patagonia well.

Filters - NiSi Variable ND, Polarizer, and Mist: If you plan to shoot video, you will need a variable ND to help control the light. This one also comes with a built-in polarizer and ¼ black mist, which removes unwanted digital sharpness and blooms your highlights, creating a dreamy look. Polarizer - I wouldn't shoot landscapes without one. It cuts harsh glare, brings the blue back into skies, and adds real vibrancy to colours.

RODE Microphone: Essential if you're shooting video. Don’t forget your windsock. Patagonia sets the record for wind speeds.

F-Stop Camera Bag: A weatherproof pack that protects your gear from the elements and is comfortable to carry for long hikes is a must.

Ninja Ultra Monitor: This is a recent addition to my pack, but for video work, I do not know how I worked without one. Your compositions will improve when you have a properly sized screen to view them.

Important smaller items: Lexar Pro 256 GB, Lexar SSD, NiSi Lens Cleaning Blower, Spare Canon LP-E6P Batteries, Logiix Piston Power 20,000 mAh Power Bank, Peak Design Capture Clip.

Location 1: Laguna Pehoe Boardwalk Trail and shoreline.

50mm, F/2.8, 1 sec

This is one of the most accessible high-reward sunrise locations in Torres del Paine. Parking is nearby, and a short walk brings you onto the wooden boardwalk overlooking Lake Pehoé and the Cuernos del Paine. The best light is at sunrise. Arrive early for pre-sunrise glow, when soft alpenglow first hits the peaks. Most photographers leave immediately after sunrise, but some of the most beautiful light often comes 20 to 30 minutes later when golden tones spread across the valley.

Compositions here are endless. The boardwalk creates natural leading lines toward the mountains, while the shoreline offers opportunities for reflections on calm mornings. I used everything from wide-angle to telephoto here, depending on conditions.

70mm, F/5, 1/800 sec.

Location 2: Laguna Torre

This is not an easy location. You earn the view. A pre-dawn hike from El Chaltén takes you into one of the most dramatic alpine valleys in Patagonia. The Cerro Torre rises like a needle into the sky and is one of the most striking peaks in the region. Sunrise is once again the best light for alpenglow. On the return hike, always turn around frequently. The valley opens up with endless opportunities for autumn foliage framed against the peaks.

A wide-angle and a mid-telephoto setup will cover most situations here while keeping pack weight down on this longer trek.

Left Photo: 100mm, F/3.2, 1/1000 sec. | Center: 56mm, F/4, 1/800 | Right Photo: 40mm, F/2.8, 1/160 sec.

Location 3: El Calafate - Glacier Perito Moreno

There are many options for seeing the glacier. We decided to go with the cost-effective route: we rented a car, drove ourselves there, and did the self-guided boardwalk. We went for the early morning light here and found it beautiful. It is busy, but there is so much space here to find your own area to shoot and see this massive glacier up close.

Be sure to stay until the afternoon if you’re looking to get a shot of Glacier Calving (massive chunks breaking off the size of buildings and splashing into the water). If you want to go on a boat tour, I’d recommend booking with Maria Turquesa, as they went the closest of all the boats we saw.

Although you are close, you will still want some zoom to capture the glacier's rugged details. My 70-200 was an ideal range.

Location 4: The Laguna de Los Tres

15mm, F/2.8, 5 Seconds.

No trip to Patagonia is complete without a hike to see where the Patagonia clothing brand got its logo from. Again, for the best light, we set off in the early morning to reach this spot for sunrise. You won’t be alone on this one; there will most likely be 100+ people joining you, even though it is a long hike. If you’d like to break up the distance, there is a campsite that is easy to book mid-way up.

I first shot this iconic scene from above, then walked down to the lake and was treated to some calm reflections of Mount Fitz Roy. I highly recommend walking over to the small viewpoint overlooking Lake Sucia.

You will need your wide-angle lens to capture both lakes in one shot.

15mm, F/4, 1/800 sec.

Location 5: Laguna Sucia

15mm, f.28, 1/250

Now, after our last location, you’re probably hoping for something quieter. This will take us to the lake we shot from above, and you will most likely be alone here. But it comes with a slight catch. There is a tricky boulder field to navigate. Bring trekking poles and follow your map closely, and you will be fine.

For light, aim to be here for sunrise. The alpenglow here is stunning. The mountains again are up close and personal, so big you will barely fit the reflections in the lake. So, bring your wide-angle lens again and shoot right at the start of the lake to fit them in. (I was still half-asleep and missed this shot.)

After sunrise, if you are feeling confident and know how to navigate in the alpine, gain some elevation and catch some foliage shots from above.

Final Thoughts

Patagonia will test both your patience and gear. The weather is unpredictable, and the wind is constant. But when everything aligns, there are a few places on earth that compare.

I hope you have an amazing trip. If you still have any questions, drop them below, and I’ll be happy to help plan your trip.

When I first met Andrew Smith, I immediately noticed his calm presence. Soft-spoken and considerate, he carries himself with an ease and fluidity that feels unmistakably shaped by his Maritime roots. It’s a presence that mirrors his photography, too: grounded, observant, but ready for an adventure. It’s a posture he got to stretch even more these past weeks, exploring Sony’s A7C II. Drawn by the need for a more travel-friendly setup, Andrew sought a tool that would keep him rooted in his surroundings without hauling around a camera that “needed its own carry-on,” he jokes. As he later discovered, the AC7 II’s stronger low-light capability became the new benchmark he now counts on.

Although Andrew hails from the Maritimes, he admits his roots didn’t necessarily shape a foundational roadmap into photography. Instead, he found much of his artistic evolution through curiosity and adventure. “I had no clue what I was doing,” he admits. “But I loved it.” What began as a creative outlet grew into a pivotal artistic shift when he moved out West, fueled by passion and ambition. This coastal move to the wide-open prairies almost a decade ago didn’t just change Andrew’s surroundings; it completely reframed how he saw spaces and photography.

Left Photo: 24mm f 6.3 1/100th second, Center Photo: 75mm, f/9, 1/100th second, Right Photo: 24mm, f/4, 1/400th second

“It is incredible how vastly different this country is from coast to coast. Having the pleasure of driving from the Maritimes to the Prairies allowed me to truly appreciate that scale. It definitely took me some time to settle in and find my eye here in Alberta. Looking back at my style when I first arrived, my images were dark, unsaturated, and lacked direction. Once I finally found my footing and felt grounded, my photography became the same. Alberta has completely reshaped me as a photographer.”

A lot of that shift is reflected in his work today.

81mm, f/4, 1/125th Second

Smith’s photography lives in the in-between moments, and while he’s drawn to landscapes and cityscapes, his lens isn’t chasing the obvious spectacle. It lingers instead on the overlooked quiet geometry of a city street or the familiar curve of a commute. “Look close enough,” he says, “and you’ll find a quiet magic hidden in the mundane.” I was curious if the A7C II helped shape this style of storytelling. “If I’m being honest,” Andrew continues, “I am not super tech-savvy. But that was never a problem with this camera. It allowed me to focus entirely on getting the shot rather than fighting the technology.”

Just don’t mistake Andrew’s approach for technophobia. It’s in the surrender, not the fight, that he finds most of his grounding. He’s found a comfortable peace in the idea that “50% of photography is skill and 50% is luck.” Rather than forcing an image, he trusts that patience will allow the experience to unfold at the right moment. I was surprised to learn how his time with the Sony A7C II quietly fit into his approach. User experience can play a huge role in creative confidence, and knowing Sony has focused heavily on refining it, I was curious whether this focus allowed Andrew to stay fluid in his workflow. Andrew reassures, “From the customizable dials that allowed me to make seamless adjustments on the fly to the incredibly simple, easy-to-navigate interface, it completely got out of the way.”

Left Photo: 28mm f/4 1/40th second, Center Photo: 60mm f5.6 1/50th second, Right Photo: 28mm f4 1/40th second

Whether navigating the low-light, fast-moving environment of the Royal Alberta Museum or capturing the almost surreal tones inside the Muttart Conservatory, Andrew was charmingly surprised that this camera kept pace and how little it got in the way. It’s a setup that couldn’t have complemented his philosophy any more: No overthinking. Intuitive workflows are where Andrew thrives best, and a rhythm that Alberta has been pivotal in nurturing.

It was here in the prairies that Andrew's ease began to expand into exploration, which fostered much of the creative confidence that defines his work. In Edmonton, especially, the city’s photographic community has helped him soar artistically. As Andrew puts it, “The Edmonton photography community is unparalleled; it is unlike anything I will find anywhere else. It is tight-knit, supportive, collaborative, and genuinely caring. I am truly so thankful for all of them.” I’m reminded of the importance of community in nurturing an artist’s growth by Andrew’s gratitude. It’s an important reminder of how small shifts in environment, community and tools can reshape an artist’s perspective.

Even a subtle change, such as working with the Sony A7C II, prompted Andrew to approach compositions differently. In many ways, it amplified the spontaneity that has always been central to his process. Andrew expands, “Knowing the capabilities of the A7C II definitely shifted my creative approach. The massive level of detail provided by the full-frame sensor allowed me to confidently shoot wider scenes and experiment with aggressive cropping and reframing during post-production.” And he found himself keeping his setup light enough that the camera was always within reach rather than packed away.

Pyramid Photo: 24mm, f/4, 1/400th second

It’s exciting to know this spontaneity is about to be tested in an entirely new way.

With a move to Czechia on the horizon, Smith is stepping into another new landscape and rhythm that promises to reshape his perspective once again. Coming from a country where distance is measured in hours of driving, the proximity of European cities offers an entirely new type of creative possibility. Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Krakow – each within reach and carrying its own visual language.

If Alberta laid the groundwork for his artistry, Europe may expand it even more.

Sunset Bridge Photo: 24mm, f6.3, 1/100th second

But at his core, Andrew’s essentials will remain simple: phone, keys, camera. The Sony A7C II has earned its place in that daily lineup, proving to be a reliable, unobstructive and moment-ready camera. It feels fitting for Andrew’s spirit. For Andrew, meaning in photography comes from having the presence to slow down and notice what’s already there.

As he prepares for his next chapter, one thing seems certain: wherever he lands, Andrew will remain firmly grounded on the earth, open to the fleeting moments, with his camera waiting quietly for the moment when light, place, and perspective align.

For over a decade, Sony’s Alpha 7R line has set the benchmark for resolution in the full-frame mirrorless space. If you wanted detail, dynamic range, and files that could be pushed in post without hesitation, this was the series you reached for.

There was always a quiet asterisk, though.

Speed- while usable - was never the defining strength.

With the arrival of the only Alpha 7R VI, that asterisk all but disappears. This is the first R-series body that doesn’t make you choose between resolution and responsiveness. Backed by a new sensor architecture, refined AI autofocus, and a shooting experience that feels more immediate, the Alpha 7R VI delivers both. It’s more than an evolution. It’s a new framework for what the R series can be.

» Pre-order the Sony Alpha 7R VI

Key Features

A New Class of Sensor: 66.8 MP Fully Stacked

66.8MP fully stacked Exmor RSTM CMOS sensor. It’s the first of its kind in the R lineup. The bump from 61MP might not seem dramatic on paper, but the fact that it’s a stacked design is what makes it stand out. This translates to increased sensor readout speed, which impacts:

• Burst Performance
• Rolling Shutter Control
• Overall responsiveness

2. Blackout-Free 30fps Shooting

With the BIONZ XR2 processor, the a7R VI can shoot full-resolution RAW at up to 30 frames per second, completely blackout-free

Tracking moving subjects through the viewfinder feels fluid and uninterrupted. Users will notice the most difference when photographing fast-paced candid moments and wildlife. It’s a level of usability that simply wasn’t part of the R-series DNA before.

3. AI Autofocus that Subtly Better

Sony didn’t need to reinvent autofocus here because it was already excellent. Instead, they refined it. The updated Real-time Recognition AF+ builds on Sony’s AI processing unit. The changes aren’t flashy, but they’re practical.

• More accurate human pose estimation
• Improved tracking precision, especially for smaller subjects
• Broader subject recognition, including animals, insects, and vehicles
• 759 phase-detect points with 94% frame coverage

4. Pre-Capture: A Quiet Game-Changer

The Pre-Capture feature allows the camera to buffer up to one second before the shutter is fully pressed. Thought you reacted too late to the moment? This feature ensures you’re a step ahead of the game. You’ll notice more of this feature in:

• Unpredictable motion
• Fleeting expressions
• Wildlife behaviour

There are trade-offs: using Pre-Capture draws from the buffer and slightly affects EVF smoothness. But in practice, it’s a tool many photographers will reach for regularly.

5. Stabilization That Matches the Resolution

At nearly 67MP, even slight movement can impact sharpness. Sony addresses this with improved 5-axis IBIS offering up to 8.5 stops (center) and up to 7 stops (periphery).

In practical terms, handheld shooting at surprisingly slow shutter speeds becomes realistic.

6. Colour and White Balance: Smarter Foundations

Sony has quietly improved auto white balance, using a combination of:

• Visible light sensing
• Infrared data
• Deep learning

The result is more consistent, natural colour - particularly in mixed or challenging lighting. While RAW shooters will always fine-tune, starting from a more accurate baseline matters.

7. A Viewing Experience That Keeps Up

The 9.44M-dot EVF returns, now with significantly increased brightness and improved colour handling. It’s detailed, making it easier to evaluate focus, exposure and colour directly in-camera.

8. Video: Significantly Better, Not the Focus

The a7R VI is a stronger video performer than its predecessor:

• 8K upt o 30p (improved readout speeds)
• Full-frame 4K 60p (no crop)
• 4K 120p for slow motion
• 10-bit 4:2:2 recording

Rolling shutter performance has notably improved, and overall usability is better. That said, it’s not a full hybrid flagship because features like internal RAW recording and advanced monitoring tools are still absent.

Bottom Line: It’s a very capable camera for video, but a stills-first camera foremost.

9. Speed: No Longer the Compromise

The a7R V was powerful but deliberate. The a7R VI feels immediate

• From moderate burst speeds -> 30fps
• From slower readout -> dramatically improved responsiveness

It won’t outpace Sony’s a9 III in pure speed, but it gets closer than any R-series camera has before - and for most photographers, it’s more than enough.

10. Image Quality: Still the Benchmark, But Even Better

Sony didn’t lose sight of what made the R series special. But it did improve:

• Dynamic range (especially with mechanical shutter)
• Exceptionally flexible RAW files
• Slight resolution Bump.

Who Is This For?

Ideal for photographers who:

• Want maximum detail without sacrificing speed
• Shoot a mix of landscape, wildlife, portrait, and commercial work
• Want one camera they can trust in almost any situation, without needing to switch bodies across different shooting styles.

If you’ve previously hesitated on the R series because it felt too slow – or leaned towards an a7 IV, a1, or even another system for versatility – this is the model that bridges that gap.

Final Thoughts

The Sony Alpha 7R VI doesn’t feel like a typical generational upgrade. Instead, it feels like a course correction.

For the first time, the R series sheds its biggest limitation and steps into a more complete role. It retains everything photographers loved (resolution, dynamic range, flexibility) but pairs it with speed and responsiveness that feels more modern.

The few compromises users have to make with this camera are hard to find, which makes this release stand out from others. We believe users will really gravitate to this new release.

Gray skies and stubborn snow remnants show that a lingering winter keeps a tight grip on our community. But while April may resist Spring, our photographers certainly don’t. This month’s contest entries showcase colour bursts, texture, and energy as we celebrate skill and creativity rather than relying on seasonal clichés.

Capturing something remarkable in the ordinary is the magic of photography. Our Entrants rose to the challenge, and this month’s results are something to celebrate! Let’s take a look at our top Winners!

Submit Your Photo for April's Contest!

WINNER

Mike Yackulic

Congratulations to our Winner, Mike, who shot a beautiful picture of North Falls in Oregon. Mike explains, “Silver Falls State Park is a wonderful park (in Oregon) filled with waterfalls, several of which you can walk behind. This waterfall has an enormous cave behind it spanning hundreds of feet.”

What our voters loved most about this photo was the framing. It’s like you’re looking into the “eye” of the waterfall. Most waterfall photos take on an air of grandiose- they fill the frame, and you can almost hear their thunderous sound through the photo. Mike’s waterfall photo, however, beckons your attention by intimately inviting you into its solitude. It’s energetic without being loud and peaceful without being too still. You can almost feel the dewy veil of the air, reaching out with a dampness that stops just short of a kiss on the skin.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

Tonya Davison

There’s a haunting feeling unfolding in the pages of Tony Davison’s Hymn Books. It is reminiscent of those long prairie road trips where you pass abandoned towns with abandoned churches - a snapshot of space and time that stands completely still. I imagine for most people, the thought probably grazes their minds about what’s inside those eerie buildings. But very few people actually stop to explore what’s inside. We’re glad Tony Davison was one of them.

Tony came across a 1930’s church on one of those roadtrips and describes what she saw: “Once inside this church, there were 2 Hymnals/Bibles sitting on the pedestal. I left them the way I found them and took the photo. In post-processing, I converted the photo to B&W so it can visualize the age of the photo.” Congratulations, Tonya!

Eliot Slaven

We are also thrilled to award another Honourable Mention to Eliot Slaven’s breathtaking capture from Smutwood Peak. In a heroic pose, this lone adventurer stands, clothed in a vibrant yellow coat, his back to the viewer, facing the jagged edges of a majestic, mountainous background. Eliot says, “One of my favourite frames from an absolutely epic morning on Smutwood Peak. The dynamic range was absolutely out of control, making this edit challenging. I still probably didn’t do the scene justice, but I’m proud of the image nonetheless.”

We agree with Eliot that what makes this image more dramatic is the edit, and viewers might be surprised by how important a good edit is in defining a winning photo. Seasoned photographers have taught classes at McBain that show us the editing behind their award-winning photos, and you would be in awe of the difference an intuitive, thoughtful edit can make. Never underestimate the tonal change and emotion that a thoughtful edit can have on your final image.

Enter our April Photo Contest!

We love that our McBain community showed up well this month! What we can learn from this month’s submissions is that there are really no limits when it comes to how far you can take your photos. Often, new photographers and even hobbyists will stop once they’ve got the shot. But what other photographers have shown this month is that experimenting in the editing room can go a long way in taking your photo from good to great - and maybe even award-winning!

With that said, we just want to encourage all of our McBain contest participants to go the extra mile! Once you’ve taken the photo, ask yourself, “How far can I take this”? You’d be surprised how much the world opens when you’re willing to stretch your creativity a little further. Thank you to all our wonderful submissions.

Our McBain Community came in strong this month… There’s a sense of anticipation in the air as we wedge closer to spring – you can feel it coming, even if winter is still lingering in the background. It’s that in-between season where anything can happen.

For photographers, that waiting period can be surprisingly inspiring. This month’s entries captured that perfectly, with a great mix of winter scenes and hints of spring on the horizon. The variety made for a really fun contest to judge, and we loved seeing the creativity that came out of this transitional time of year.

WINNER:

Italo Pino

Taking our Top Spot is Italo Pino. A few months ago, Italo won an Honourable Mention, so it’s exciting to see him move up on the podium. His winning image captures the high-energy world of BMX racing in a fun, creative way – action frozen mid-air with great clarity, adrenaline leaping off the frame.

Italo describes the exact scene: “Under a brilliant blue August sky, BMX riders of various ages exploded off the start hill during championship weekend in St. Albert on August 24, 2025. Competitors from across the country gathered for the Canada Cup and Alberta Cup finals, showcasing elite talent in both male and female divisions. Many spectators watched as athletes launched into the course, chasing podium dreams and national recognition. In the photo, riders surged forward in a blur of colour, power, and determination. Multiple exposures were used to capture the intensity of the race, where fractions of a second separated victory from defeat.”

Some striking Honourable Mentions are also highlighted!

HONOURABLE MENTIONS:

Bruce Raynor

Bruce’s photo of a serene moment of a BC Ferries vessel at sea ran neck-and-neck with this month’s winner. It’s a beautiful photo of one of Canada’s most scenic areas- Duke Point. Bruce writes, “Calm waters and colours blended so well in that moment on the journey back to Alberta”. Bruce’s photo was a handheld photo taken with an Olympus OMD EM1 Mk III using a Zukio Pro 40-150mm lens. “The glow of the sunset reflecting on the calm waters makes this a truly peaceful contemplative shot”.

Tonya Davison

Our next honourable mention caught a ton of likes from our McBain staff. As photographers, when we start asking ourselves, “how does this image feel?” rather than just “how does it look?”, we can surprise ourselves with what we capture. Tonya’s image feel sharply cold – the kind of cold that creeps into your bones just looking at it. The hoarfrost has formed into jagged blade-like shapes along the structure – almost like something out of Edward Scissorhands. These violently sharp edges give the photo a biting quality that mirrors the kind of winter morning where the cold feels just as sharp against your skin. It’s a great example of how texture and detail can evoke a physical sensation.

Thanks to everyone who submitted this month. We are always encouraged to see the McBain Community continue to show up with their best. Transitional seasons often bring the most interesting lights and stories to photograph, and this month’s entries proved exactly that.

WINNER

Jonathan Gillingham

“This image was taken at Aylmer Lake Lodge in the Northwest Territories.” – Jonathan Gillingham

Jonathan’s photograph captures one of the most striking and elusive scenes in Canadian Wildlife Photography: a loen caribou cutting through icy northern waters – a reminder of the vast, untouched landscapes that definie Canada’s North.

The calm water and quiet determination of this animal creates a sense of stillness that draws the viewer in. Jonathan’s patience and timing paid off beautifully, resulting in an image that balances power and serenity in equal measure. Congratulations Jonathan on your win!

HONOURABLE MENTIONS:

Eliot Slavens

Starting a hike at 3:00 am in the cold darkness is a challenge in itself, but Eliot’s dedication to chasing the perfect light paid off in spectacular fashion. The result is a poetic landscape that feels both peaceful and triumphant at the top of Pharaoh Peak. It reminds us that sometimes the most memorable photographs come after long climbs, early alarms, and a little stubborn determination.

Eliot says, “Though it was hard to get out of the sleeping bag, this photo made the trek well worth it in the end.”

Michelle Brandenburg

The reflections ripple softly on the water’s surface in Michelle’s photo of submerged trees at Preacher’s Point. Her photo transforms a rainy afternoon into something hauntingly beautiful as partially submerged birch trees feel almost like a painting. Michelle captures a brief moment in nature and turns it into something moody and quiet, proving that bad weather can sometimes yield the most evocative photographs. Way to go, Michelle!

Autumn may have slipped past us, but thanks to the artists in our community, its colours and stories remain preserved. Every season reveals a new way of seeing the world – in all its boldness, quiet peace, and wild beauty. Huge thanks to everyone who entered October’s contest, as we welcome you to view some more of this month’s submissions below!

As the landscape shifts again, we’re excited to witness to next chapter through your lenses.

Submit your November Photos and keep the storytelling alive!

If summer had an anthem, it might go: “August slipped away, and for a moment in time, your photos were prime!” Honestly, though! We had some pitch-perfect photos this month to wrap up a summer that will leave memories playing on repeat. Thank you to everyone who submitted their best work for August! The level of talent always continues to blow us away, and this month was no exception.

August Winner:

David McClure

We’re thrilled to announce that David McClure is our August Monthly Photo Contest Winner! It was such a delight to see an architectural photograph come up on top this month. Since animals often dominate the wins, it’s nice to see a moment for the architecture community.

His architecture photo of a circular stairwell caught our staff’s eye with its striking contrast and dynamic point of view storytelling.

Why We Loved This Shot:

Creativity: A unique Angle. A contrast between edges and curves. And colour pops in the right places.

Technical Skill: A Sharp photo with an exposure that frames the photo well

Storytelling: There’s a quiet story in this picture that probably goes unnoticed, but along the edges, everything feels muted - almost college life reflected in a monotonous tone. But your eyes are drawn up the spiralling staircase towards a burst of light and vibrant greenery, like a glimpse of hope or beauty at the heart of the everyday grind. It’s like a visual paradox.

The Prize:

As this month’s winner, David McClure will receive a 16x20 gallery-wrapped canvas of his winning print.

Honourable Mentions:

Dustin Bowdige

Dustin took this photo of a BC Lion warm-up before taking on the Edmonton Elks. No stranger to showing up in our top 3, Dustin has a knack for visual storytelling. We specifically enjoy his black and white sports photos.

Dustin’s image this month captures the anticipation of a moment, stripping away distractions and letting the viewer focus on the grit and emotion of a game before it even begins. Great shot, Dustin! Definitely one of our McBain favourites!

Alec Postill

Our next honourable mention brings a single-shot image to the mix that stirred up lots of conversation among staff members. The result is a striking and cinematic image that feels both eerie and majestic. Alec’s willingness to immerse himself in his art and stretch his creative muscles paid off as he describes the process of his photo:

“I had an idea like this in my head for many years and finally got to execute it in the spring of 2024. I often incorporate props into my self-portraits, and this particular evening at Alexandra Falls, I had an old cape and a vintage oil lamp with me. Despite being all alone in the middle of the night, the hair on my neck stood with every wolf howl. My eyes were heavy from the 1200km drive the day before…. I managed to create some of my favourite shots to date.”

Enter September’s Contest!

Thank you to everyone who shared their artistic vision with us this month – your photos were the perfect way to close out summer. Congratulations once again to our Winner and Honourable Mentions! As Autumn rolls in, we can’t wait to see the creative colours and moments you will capture this season. Keep your cameras ready and your imaginations wide open!

In the meantime, take a moment to enjoy the outstanding collection of photos shared by some of our talented contestants.
