Chasing Movement in Ordinary Places with the Sony FX5

The way someone moves through a space, light changing across a face, wind catching fabric, or the environment shifting around a subject are the kinds of small, unpredictable moments I’m always looking for through a camera.

When Sony lent me the new FX5 to take out into the field, I wanted to test it in a way that felt true to how I like to shoot. Instead of creating something controlled, I took the camera outside with a dancer and gave ourselves the freedom to explore.

There is something I really enjoy about working this way. You can have a general idea of what you want to capture, but the environment and artist inevitably give you something youdidn’t plan for, and that’s often where the magic happens.

I have spent two decades working across documentary, narrative and commercial projects, from intimate stories to large-scale productions. That range of experience has shaped an approach that is adaptable yet grounded in strong visual storytelling. For me, cinematography is as much about instinct and curiosity as it is intention and technical craft.

Finding Frames

When a dancer is improvising, you know each movement will happen a little differently every time. I responded to what Tyler chose to express, moving with him, finding a rhythm between us, being very present in the moment. It became less about creating a traditional shot list and more about observation, anticipation, anticipationand reaction.

This is where the FX5’s AI-based autofocus became particularly useful. Having focus stay locked onto my subject meant I could put more of my attention toward his movement and how I wanted to frame it. The larger rotating LCD screen gave me the freedom to quickly change my own position, particularly when getting the camera lower or moving through the environment with him. These practical features can have a large creative impact when they allow you to work more instinctively.

A Little Room For Change

I also approached this shoot knowing that the final images weren’t necessarily going to live in one format. We are creating for so many different screens nowadays that I find myself thinking beyond a single aspect ratio more and more.

Filming in Open Gate gave me a larger canvas to compose with more possibilities in mind, not limiting me in deciding exactly where every frame would ultimately live while filming.

Being outside also meant working almost entirely with what was presented to us. Clouds moved. The direction and quality of the light changed. Tyler moved between open areas and pockets of shade. Instead of fighting those changes, I embraced them.

Having three base ISO options gave me more dynamic range to adapt to those conditions, while recording 16-bit X-OCN RAW, leaving plenty of information in the image in the grade. I want to make deliberate choices on set, but I also don’t want to lock myself out of choices later.

Keeping It Simple.

Another thing I wanted to explore was how simply I could work. There are productions where I’m surrounded by a full camera department, monitors, audio and everything else that comes with a larger set. Then there are times when filmmaking is just you, a camera, and the person in front of it.

For this shoot, keeping things small allowed Tyler and me to move effortlessly through the location without overcomplicating the process. I appreciated that same simplicity in theFX5’s monitoring options and how user-friendly the menu system is. I could keep the information I needed in front of me while controlling what was being sent to an external monitor. It’s a small workflow detail, but one that helps keep things moving without interrupting the creative flow.

Staying Present.

When I’m behind a camera, I want my attention on what is unfolding in front of me. The best images often happen in the moment when given more time and space to notice. There will always be technical decisions happening in the background, but I don’t want those decisions to pull me away from the reason I picked up the camera in the first place. Sometimes the most interesting thing you can do is simply staying present and patient with what is unfolding in front of the lens.

The specs for this camera look pretty impressive on paper, but how those tools translate to real-world workflows will ultimately define the FX’s appeal for creators, especially those focusing on documentary, commercial, event, and multi-platform media.

Below we break down some Feature Highlights and compare them to its FX3 predecessor:

5K Open Gate Recording
- Probably the feature filmmakers have been asking Sony for the most. The FX3 didn’t have it, but the FX5 makes reframing easier for vertical, widescreen, and social deliverables from a single clip. It’s an attractive feature for creating both vertical and horizontal deliverables, commercial work, reframing in post, using anamorphic lenses, and if you want maximum flexibility from every shot.

Internal X-OCN Recording

One of the most important features, because it’s not just about image quality; it’s about removing friction from a cinema workflow. While the FX3 could output RAW video, it was only compatible with an external recorder via HDMI. The FX5 eliminates the need for extra batteries, cables, and storage. But more importantly, it allows filmmakers to capture Sony’s RAW workflow directly into the camera’s media card, preserving the camera’s wide dynamic range and extensive colour information for better grading flexibility and streamlined post-production workflow.

A New Full-Frame Stacked Sensor paired with the latest BIONZ XR2 processor and AI processing unit

The FX5’s new stacked sensor is aimed less at dramatically improving image quality and more at expanding capability. Faster sensor readout supports features like 5K Open Gate recording, advanced autofocus, high frame rates, reduced rolling shutter, and improved overall responsiveness. For FX3 users, the well-loved 12.1 MP full-frame remains highly capable, but the FX5’s advantage lies less in dramatically improving image quality and more in expanding creative flexibility.

Three Base ISO settings (800, 4000, and 12800)

Compared to the FX3’s Dual Base ISO, the FX5 provides 3 points where the sensor delivers optimal balance in dynamic range, noise performance, highlight retention, and shadow detail. The FX3 earned its reputation for impressive low-light performance, and the FX5 builds on that foundation with an additional base ISO.

High Frame Rate Recording up to 5K 120p and 4K 240p

While the FX3 already offered 120fps (and 240fps in Full HD), the FX5 makes a significant jump in preserving considerably more resolution when creating extreme slow-motion sequences by providing 4k at 240fps. Greater detail, more cropping flexibility, sharper deliverables. For commercial shooters, sports filmmakers, and anyone producing cinematic B-Roll, it isn’t about the numbers, but creative flexibility. More of an “icing on the cake” feature.

Enhanced 5-axis image stabilization with Dynamic Active Mode

The FX3 already has excellent stabilization, so we’re careful not to oversell this feature, but you’ll find it to be more refined in the FX5, especially for handheld filmmaking. The FX5 provides a redesigned stabilization system that Sony claims will provide approximately double the roll compensation compared to the FX3. We could see a significant difference in the footage comparison from Sony, but the advantage appears to be in the refinement rather than reinvention.
AI-powered subject recognition and autofocus

The FX5 combines a new sensor and processing pipeline with a dedicated AI processing unit. It won’t necessarily make the FX3’s autofocus feel outdated, but the newer AI processing in the FX5 can recognize subjects more intelligently. Rather than simple eye tracking, the camera can analyze head position, posture, and an isolated moving subject within a scene. In all of their cameras, Sony’s autofocus remains one of the most trusted systems in the video world. The AI angle in the FX5, though, means a solo creator can focus more on directing a scene while the camera handles the technical workload.

Optional OLED electronic viewfinder and XLR handle

Beyond its imaging capabilities, Sony expanded the FX5’s production-ready ecosystem. An optional OLED electronic viewfinder addresses one of the most common requests from FX3 users, while the new XLR-H2 handle introduces professional audio features including 32-bit float recording. Individually, neither accessory is likely to be the deciding factor for most buyers, but together they reinforce the FX5’s role as a camera designed to adapt to a wide range of production environments.

Final Thoughts

More than anything, the FX5 feels like a camera built around creative momentum. Compact enough to travel and powerful enough for demanding productions, it brings an added layer of flexibility to the increasing ways content is captured, delivered, and experienced today.

For FX3 users continuing to grow in their craft, the FX5 feels like a natural evolution, expanding what’s possible while remaining rooted in the filmmaking experience that made the Cinema Line compelling in the first place. For filmmakers and storytellers, these refined tools mean less time working around technical limitations and more time leaning into creative processes. There’s an undeniable excitement knowing those creative boundaries can be pushed just a little further.

Sony's long-awaited update to its compact super-zoom is finally here with the introduction of the RX10 V. You have to rewind the clock all the way back to September of 2017 for the last release in the RX10 series, but Sony has made many key innovations since that have found their way into this new all-in-one super zoom.

The RX10 V has been reloaded with the ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* 24-600mm F2.4-4.0 lens and a familiar large 20.1MP 1.0-type image sensor, but the winning combination now benefits from Sony’s AI-powered Real-Time Recognition autofocus. Its fast and accurate processing can detect and track subjects such as people, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains, and airplanes. The camera has also been outfitted with 30 fps blackout-free continuous shooting, up to 4k 120p video, 630 shots of battery life, and a larger Quad-VGA OLED electronic viewfinder.

A ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* F2.4-4.0 zoom covers 24mm to 600mm¹ (25x) with optical image stabilization, spanning everyday shots to sports and wildlife. Macro focusing reaches approximately 3cm (1.18-inches) at 24mm¹ and approximately 72cm (28.3-inches) at 600mm¹ for tele-macro.

he BIONZ XR™ image processing engine keeps noise low at mid-to-high ISO, including indoors and in low light. Skin tones, skies, and greenery hold high resolution with accurate color and texture.

Twelve Creative Look presets set color and texture in-camera, and you can customize each one. The updated D-Range Optimizer (DRO) balances highlights and shadows across a wider range, up to Lv8, lifting shadows in strong backlight for more natural portraits.

Sticking to one style can be effective because it attracts people who appreciate that particular aesthetic. However, it often confines you to a specific category, making it difficult to explore beyond your usual approach. Personally, I prefer to take photos in bright and sunny conditions, especially during the golden light of early morning and late evening. This lighting works well for the cheerful and dramatic images I enjoy creating. Unfortunately, when the sun isn't shining, I feel compelled to adopt a more subdued mood in my photography. I was reminded of this during a recent shoot, where the weather was consistently dreary, rainy, and windy, leaving me longing for that golden, crepuscular light.

I'm shooting with the Alpha 9 III, which is known for its global shutter, very good stabilization, and its incredible autofocus and tracking capabilities. I set the camera to burst mode at 120 frames per second with a 1/500th of a second shutter speed, fast enough for action but slow enough to show movement with motion blur. With those settings, I had at least 90% of the images sharp and in focus. I'm used to culling a lot of photos because I shoot and record more images than I need, just to be safe. But pre-shooting is a spectacular feature because I can indiscriminately start taking photos of everything that is moving, or about to move, but only save the photos that are actually worth keeping. I likely shot a hundred times more photos than I needed, but because only the best ones got saved to my memory card, I found that when I downloaded my photos, I only had the best sequences and fewer images to cull than usual.

Another way to stay organized when shooting in burst mode is to enable display as Group. On Sony cameras, it's in the menu at:

Playback>Playback Option> Display as Group>On

If, for example, I hold down my shutter and take hundreds of photos of one bird, but after I take another group of photos that's way better. The camera will display each shutter press as 2 photo groups. With one click, I can go back to the first series and "Delete All in This Group" to remove them, keeping only the second burst of photos, which turned out much better. With this trick, fewer photos need to be downloaded, and less time is spent on the computer.

For that reason, I would say the A9 III is the action editor's camera of choice. Editors love having options, and if a photographer were to submit photos shot at a rate only a slow-motion camera could capture, they could pick which fraction of a second has the best action for their purposes.

You might be guessing where I'm going with this: I can take photos and slow-motion video at the same time. The short, fast bursts I take can be exported by my photo editor or imported by video software as a sequence. In the past, I always had to decide whether what I was shooting was better for photos or for video, and for the first time, I never had to make that decision. Culling my photos was a quick affair; it just felt like I was playing a slow-motion video, and once I landed on a photo that I liked, I edited it like normal. If you try this, don't forget to star or label the best shots so you can easily delete the photos you don't need to save space.

With this little trip out to the wetland, I was shooting in a new way, in sub-optimal conditions, but still capturing sights that were a joy to see as photos, and engaging to see as video. Maybe next time my shutter finger is calling, I'll be less likely to stay inside just because of a few clouds.

While both Canon and Sony have been teasing big announcements this week, Panasonic managed to beat them to the punch by dropping an intriguing new fixed-lens compact camera. Crafted with an elegant simplicity, the LUMIX L10 is focused on delivering an instinctive feel through intuitive controls so photographers can relax and enjoy the creative process.

The new compact will feature a LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMILUX 24-75mm F1.7-2.8 lens and a 20.4MP 4/3-type back-illuminated (BSI) CMOS image sensor, enabling expressive detail and beautiful bokeh. The LUMIX L10 will also include new Photo Styles, including L.Classic for soft tones and muted colours, and the warm amber highlights and contrast of L.ClassicGold.

Photographers share a unique bond with nature. We see a lot of beauty, and as we honour Earth Day, we’re reminded that our cameras do more than capture landscapes – they help us advocate for them. Earth Day isn’t necessarily about perfection– but it is about awareness. It’s an invitation to move beyond the lens and consider how we give back to the environment that provides us with as much inspiration.

Below, we highlight 5 ways you can start making an impact in your craft:

1. Support Sustainable Gear

Every purchase sends a message when you choose which camera bag, accessory, or piece of equipment you welcome into your family. Buying accessories or camera bags made with recycled materials encourages companies to produce responsibly while also lowering the carbon footprint of your creative work.

There are a few names in the game that center their products around sustainable materials and practices. When shopping for camera accessories or bags, here are some environmentally conscious brands you’ll want to keep in mind:

LoweproLowpro explicitly states its environmental responsibility policy as part of its brand values. They launched a Green Line of camera bags, where products feature a green line logo to indicate their sustainability level, showing how much recycled or responsibly sourced material is in each product. They measure sustainability using standards like GRI 301-2, which tracks the percentage of recycled yarn in fabrics. They have also transitioned to PFC-free water-resistant coatings, reducing harmful chemicals in production. Some Lowepro bags are made with as much as 75% recycled materials including the packaging. They also use solution-dyeing processes that reduce water use by up to 80% compared with traditional dyeing.
Peak Design
Peak Design’s sustainability efforts are supported by several independent certifications and memberships, including the Certified B Corporation (meeting high standards of social and environmental performance). They have measurable targets to improve the sustainability of their products, with a projected 90% of their primary fabrics to come from recycled materials by 2027. Peak Design has taken rare steps to measure its entire carbon footprint and offset it since the company began. They actively fund and advocate for environmental and conservation causes through nonprofits such as The Conservation Alliance.
Urth
Urth gear is designed with sustainability in mind. Their backpacks are made with approximately 70% recycled materials (especially recycled nylon), which helps divert textiles from landfill without compromising durability. Tree planting is a core part of Urth’s sustainability strategy, where they plant one tree for every product sold – contributing to ecosystem restoration. Their strategy is to offset the carbon impact of production to create a net-positive effect on the environment. They also continuously search for low-impact materials, refining their designs to minimize material during production. Urth’s packaging avoids single-use plastics, using recycled materials instead. It’s a mission with purpose.

2. Recharge, Recycle Batteries

Between Cameras, flashes, and accessories, photographers go through a lot of
batteries – especially on long shoots. One of the easiest ways to make a small environmental impact is by taking care of your batteries. Here are a few tips to maximize your battery health:

Charge Before They Are Empty
Lithium-ion batteries last longer when they’re topped up before hitting 0%. Try recharging when your battery charge cycle is hovering around 20-30%
Avoid Overcharging
Leaving batteries plugged in overnight is occasionally okay, but consistently doing so can shorten their lifespan.
Rotate Multiple Batteries
Cycling through your batteries helps them wear evenly – and ensures you’re never caught without power.

And finally, when your battery reaches the end of its cycle, it’s important to be mindful of how you dispose of it. Many local recycling depots and electronics stores accept used batteries, keeping harmful materials out of landfills.

3. Print with Purpose

While photo printing isn’t free from enviromental impact, when done with intention and care, you can easily reduce clutter and waste. Here a few tips you can follow to keep your environmental footprint in check when printing:

Curate your Photos

Look for Energy Star & EPeat Ratings
Many Canon printers (especially larger formats like imagePROGRAF) have ENERGY STAR and EPEAT Gold certifications - meaning they meet internationally recognized standards for energy efficiency and lower environmental impact.
Refillable Ink & Recycled Materials
Look for MegaTank/MAXIFY printers that use refillable ink tanks – a big sustainability benefit if you print often.
Canon Recycling Programs
Canon offers cartridge and hardware recycling programs to keep consumables and old devices out of landfills.
Choose your Paper wisely
Printing on FSC-certified, recycled, or sustainably sourced photo papers dramatically improves the environmental footprint of your prints.

4. Rescue Your Film, Preserve Your Memories

Remember that film you dropped off for developing and/or scanning? It’s still in the dark about what’s next - literally. Every captured moment forsaken, abandoned to a life of eternal obscurity. Snapshots of your life- just vanished! Okay, maybe not that dramatic, but you would be shocked how many rolls of film get ghosted after being dropped off.

And while we’d love to hold onto every roll indefinitely, abandoned negatives must be binned after a certain period to keep our lab space running efficiently. We can only hold onto negatives for so long before we are required to dispose of them. Your negatives have gone through a long journey behind the scenes. Bringing them home is a small way to complete that story.

5. Sell, Trade-In, Trade-Up, or Donate

When we go buy new gear, we put so much research, discipline, and intention into making sure we stretch every last dollar, and we purchase in ways that align with our ethics. I wonder what the ripple effect would be if we were equally intentional about the gear we left behind. That camera sitting on the shelf? The lens you upgraded from last year? It’s sitting in a drawer or box that could fuel someone else’s creative journey! It’s time to give it a second life or ethically dispose of it.
